The 15th Annual Water Garden and Water lily Symposium was held July 29th to August 8th, 1999 in Kassel, Germany. This exciting and informative event was opened with a greeting by the president of the Friends of the Water Garden society in Germany, Mr. Herbert Bollerhey. Also speaking were a number of dignitaries including a member of the Ministry of the Hessian Department of Agriculture and Forestry in Germany, Barbara Davies of England, Chairwoman of the I.W.G.S., Mr. Karl Zwermann, the German Chairman of the Central Association of Horticulture, and the Lord Mayor of Kassel, Mr. Georg Lewandoswki. These notables were present to introduce the German Water Lily Queen to announce the I.W.G.S. selection for the water lily of the year 2000.

The selection was the hybrid cultivar Escarboucle, a deep red variety that has been a favorite of water gardeners and collectors for nearly one hundred years, was introduced in Europe by Latour Marliac in 1909. This variety has been recognized as one of the prized varieties of the century for it spectacular vermillion-crimson blossoms that are produced in abundance. The fragrant flowers will open to seven inches wide from May through September. The compact rootstocks are not invasive and are adaptable to water up [to three feet deep.

Remember this exceptional variety when selecting water lilies for your water garden this year. With adequate fertilization and six hours or more of direct sunlight, this cultivar will prove itself all summer long.
